How Finland buys defence drones

We hold 31 contracts, tenders and notices with Finland as the buyer. For the armed forces, the tenders come from the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command. The Finnish Border Guard buys its own drones, and police drones are bought by the National Police Board.

The Border Guard buys drones on a steady cycle, from small systems to larger ones for the border environment, and has used a restricted procedure for some of them. It publishes requests for information before it tenders, and they have covered both aerial systems and unmanned ground vehicles. Answering a request for information is how a supplier gets its product in front of the Border Guard before the tender is written.

For the Defence Forces, the Logistics Command has run participation rounds for portable unmanned aerial systems and bought small drones for training.

The police side covers equipment and counter-drone sensing. The National Police Board has bought drone equipment for the police, Customs and the Åland police under a framework, and systems that detect and track drones in the lower airspace.
