Norwegian Long-Range Maritime Surveillance Drones
Use this to quickly assess program maturity and supplier depth.
Norway's Long-Range Maritime Surveillance Drones program aims to acquire Arctic-capable, long-range unmanned aerial systems to be stationed at Andøya Air Station (approximately 300 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle) as part of the 2025-2036 Norwegian Defense Pledge. The program is designed to complement Norway's P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol fleet and provide persistent Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Targeting (ISR&T) capabilities to detect and monitor potential adversaries across Norway's vast northern territories. Two American manufacturers are competing for the contract: General Atomics with the MQ-9B SeaGuardian (a Medium-Altitude, Long-Endurance system) and Northrop Grumman with the MQ-4C Triton (a High-Altitude, Long-Endurance system). From a strategic perspective, this program is critical to Norway's defense posture in the High North and supports NATO's regional surveillance capabilities, particularly given increased Russian military activity and sophisticated counter-drone threats demonstrated by adversaries in the region. The project remains in the concept stage as of early 2025, with the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) conducting a concept selection study and defining operational requirements.
