Germany NNbS Short and Very Short Range Air Defence

NNbS (Nah- und Nächstbereichsschutz) is the Bundeswehr's programme for short and very short range ground-based air defence, meant to protect mobile land forces, command posts and installations against air threats including drones. In January 2024 the Bundestag budget committee released EUR 1.3 billion over seven years to develop part of the system with the ARGE NNbS team of Rheinmetall, Diehl Defence and Hensoldt, using IRIS-T SLM and SLS missiles on Boxer vehicles, with series-ready prototypes due by 2028. A separate sub-project ordered one prototype and 18 series Skyranger 30 gun systems on Boxer from Rheinmetall in February 2024 for EUR 595 million gross, with an option for 30 more.
