UK Project Corvus

Project Corvus is a UK Ministry of Defence programme valued at £130-150 million to develop and procure a next-generation tactical unmanned aerial system (UAS) as a Watchkeeper WK450 successor, focused on MALE-class ISTAR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance) with a 24-hour endurance requirement for persistent battlefield surveillance in contested environments. Launched publicly in mid-April 2025, its purpose is to replace the reliability-challenged Watchkeeper—limited to 16-hour endurance and 140 km radius—with a cost-effective platform for division- and corps-level deep battlespace operations up to 150+ km range. Key requirements include real-time target detection/tracking via cooperative payloads (EO/IR, SAR, laser designators), secure low-latency data sharing across coalitions, electronic resilience in GPS-denied/degraded airspace, and rapid deployability without expanding 47 Regiment Royal Artillery's workforce. Key milestones encompass Phase One completion by late 2025, pre-qualification questionnaire (PQQ) responses due end-April 2025, formal tender in summer 2025, main contract from May 2026 (5-year initial term, extendable to 2036), and minimum deployable capability targeted for end-2025/early 2026. Potential platforms under consideration include Raybird (Skyeton, 24-hour endurance, 185 km range), T-20 variants (24-hour endurance, 22 kg payload), VTOL systems with 20-hour endurance and 50 kg payloads, PhantomHawk (12+ hours, edge AI), and others like PD-2 with low radar cross-section; no contract awarded as of early 2026. Currently in pre-tender procurement (full release expected early 2026), the programme aligns with the Army's 20-40-40 doctrine—emphasizing drones for 40% of combat power alongside loitering munitions—enhancing strategic significance by restoring persistent awareness amid modern threats like electronic warfare, as seen in Ukraine. It prioritizes survivability over vulnerable legacy MALE designs, scalability for upgrades, and integration with joint/coalition frameworks where air dominance is uncertain.
