Low-cost free space optical (fso) comm for GROUP-1 and GROUP-2 unmanned aerial system (UAS)

This $1.25 million Department of the Air Force contract funds the development of low-cost Free Space Optical (FSO) communication systems specifically for Group 1 and Group 2 small unmanned aerial systems (UAS). FSO technology provides high-bandwidth, secure data links that are free from spectrum licensing and have a lower probability of interception or detection compared to traditional radio communications. Group 1 and 2 UAS are small drones weighing under 55 pounds, often used for tactical reconnaissance where reliable, low-latency communication is critical.
