The Department of the Air Force is procuring from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems an Automatic Takeoff and Landing Capability (ATLC) Technical Maturation Effort (TME) for the MQ-9 Reaper, valued at USD 26,222,544, to develop and mature technology enabling autonomous takeoffs and landings via satellite link at remote or divert airfields without ground control stations. This enhances the MQ-9A's operational flexibility by expanding crosswind limits, maximum landing weights, and weather tolerances, reducing aircrew needs and improving mission effectiveness. Strategically, it supports the USAF's Agile Combat Employment by allowing self-deployment to dispersed Pacific airfields, increasing survivability against near-peer threats like Chinese missiles.
