The Defense Contract Management Agency has awarded BAE Systems Information and Electronic Systems Integration Inc. a $6,899,596 contract to analyze, design, and develop a next-generation High Power Microwave (HPM) counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) system, focusing on integrating an High Power Electromagnetic (HPEM) system onto an operational platform. This effort addresses the strategic need for directed energy weapons capable of neutralizing drone swarms by emitting electromagnetic pulses that disable electronics, as demonstrated in Pentagon tests and ongoing military developments against threats seen in conflicts like Ukraine. Such systems provide a cost-effective, one-to-many defense superior to kinetic interceptors for layered protection of forces.
