The largest opportunity on the board closes in days: the Greek Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Island Policy's €35M unmanned aerial vehicle procurement for border surveillance runs to 7 September. As reported in week 31 it was open for bids, and it remains open — teams that have not already positioned with a Greek partner are effectively out of time. Behind it, the US Air Force's counter-drone detect-and-defeat requirement closes 9 September, making this a week where the two shortest fuses are also the two most strategically significant buys.
Where demand is heading
Counter-UAS and training dominate the mission mix (nine and eleven mission areas respectively), and they increasingly arrive bundled: the Air Force requirement is scoped as detect-and-defeat plus training, favouring suppliers who can deliver effectors, sensors and courseware together rather than hardware alone.
Civil and dual-use ISR is where the addressable European volume sits this week: the Portuguese Navy (coastal UAV), a Polish forestry district (fire-detection sensing) and Czech transmission operator ČEPS (thermographic line inspection) are all buying sensing outcomes. Two of the three want a service or a payload, not an airframe.
Greece is the most active European buyer, with three separate requirements spanning coast guard UAVs, municipal civil protection on Thira and cross-border flood-response volunteer equipment — an argument for local integration and support presence over one-off exports.
US buyers account for the bulk of activity, and W S DARLEY & CO took two awards, a reminder that established federal supply and distribution channels remain a defensible route into US drone procurement.Tenders worth bidding
Greek UAV procurement, €35M — Ministry of Maritime Affairs; closes 7 Sept. Maritime border surveillance at scale; primes and integrators only.
Counter Drone Detect and Defeat System — Dept of the Air Force; closes 9 Sept. For C-UAS vendors able to package detection, defeat and training.
MALE/HAPS operations for AGAMENON, €1.0M — Fuerteventura Tech Park; closes 4 Sept. Services-and-data play for operators, not manufacturers.
Coastal UAV systems, €150K — Portuguese Navy; closes 20 Sept. Small fixed-wing ISR; accessible to SMEs.
Thira civil protection systems, €439K — Municipality of Thira; closes 5 Oct. Drones plus control centre and comms — integrators with C2 capability.Who's winning
Unmanned Fusion Warfare Laboratory, NSWC Crane — Dept of the Army → Krempp Construction Inc, $9.8M. Infrastructure spend signals a durable US test-and-integration hub for unmanned systems at Crane.
sUAS sole source — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement → Auterion Government Solutions Inc, $1.2M. A sole-source route reinforces incumbency around software-defined sUAS autonomy in US law enforcement.Market signal
ℹ️Buyers are paying for capability packages — sensing plus C2 plus training — more than for airframes, as the Air Force, Thira and Greek volunteer-network requirements all show. Vendors without a courseware, C2 or data-services line should be buying or partnering for one now.
