The EDF Drone Call 2024, part of the European Defence Fund (EDF) 2024 work programme, funds development of advanced unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), including small enhanced European UAS and medium altitude long endurance RPAS, for intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, reconnaissance (ISTAR), and collaborative combat roles to enhance EU strategic autonomy and reduce reliance on non-EU suppliers. Launched in 2024 as calls for proposals with applications due by November 2024, the programme selected projects among 62 funded initiatives totaling nearly €1 billion, supporting R&D in early stages like feasibility studies and technology development. From a defense-intelligence perspective, it holds strategic significance by bolstering high-intensity warfare capabilities, manned-unmanned teaming in contested environments, and EU sovereignty in drone technologies amid regional threats.
