The Joint Research Centre is the European Commission's in-house science and knowledge service, originally established under the Euratom Treaty and headquartered in Brussels with research sites at Ispra, Geel, Karlsruhe, Petten and Seville. Directorate E covers Space, Security and Migration and is based at the Ispra site on Lake Maggiore, the JRC's largest. Unit E.1 handles Disaster Risk Management and runs the Disaster Risk Management Knowledge Centre, INFORM, the Risk Data Hub and related crisis-management tools that translate scientific evidence into operational disaster-response and civil-protection advice, which is why it procures Earth-observation, sensing and drone-related services.
