Japan V-BAT East China Sea Reconnaissance

The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) is procuring multiple V-BAT unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) from Shield AI under a USD 25,000,000 contract to serve as its first maritime-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) platform for surface vessels. The V-BAT, a single-engine ducted-fan vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) UAS, enhances JMSDF's surveillance and intelligence-gathering capabilities in shipborne and austere environments, including GPS- and comms-denied areas. This deal, the start of a planned multi-year stream of orders, reinforces Japan's defense posture and operational readiness in the Indo-Pacific amid regional tensions, particularly with China.
