Quick decision context for procurement relevance and maturity.
Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, awarded a €50 million framework contract to Airbus Defence and Space (with partner Israel Aerospace Industries using the Heron RPAS) for maritime aerial surveillance services using Medium Altitude Long Endurance Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), including platform, payload, communication, and operational support experts, to be deployed in Greece, Italy, and/or Malta. The services support pre-planned and ad-hoc missions for border surveillance, transmitting real-time data to Frontex and national coast guards via direct or satellite links. This follows successful trials since 2018 and enhances EU external border monitoring amid Frontex's expanded role in border security.
