Quick decision context for procurement relevance and maturity.
Switzerland signed a contract in July 2025 to procure five IRIS-T SLM medium-range ground-based air defence systems from German manufacturer Diehl Defence for approximately 500 million Swiss Francs (not EUR). The systems, featuring advanced AESA radar technology and a 40-kilometer range, will protect Switzerland against modern aerial threats including combat aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles. The procurement is part of the European Sky Shield Initiative and closes a critical capability gap in Swiss air defence. Deliveries are scheduled between late 2028 and 2031, with initial operational capability targeted as soon as possible after the first unit arrives.
