The Archer-NG is India's indigenous Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) UAV program, led by DRDO's Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), designed as a weaponized platform for Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, Reconnaissance (ISTAR), artillery targeting, battlefield assessment, and precision strikes. It evolves from the Rustom series and TAPAS-BH-201 program, which failed to meet full operational requirements, positioning Archer-NG as a cost-effective replacement with a single-engine, twin-boom pusher configuration, 1,700 kg all-up weight, 300-400 kg payload capacity (including Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAAW), Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs), laser-guided rockets, and loitering munitions), operational altitude up to 30,000 feet, endurance of 12+ hours, and 1,000 km range. Key milestones include modifications starting mid-2022 from Rustom-1/Archer for combat roles, high-speed taxi trials, and the maiden flight successfully completed by early 2025 (validating airframe, avionics, and controls), with the prototype using an Austro Engine E4 inherited from TAPAS-BH-201 while indigenous 180-220 hp engines are under development by VRDE. Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) will produce 20 Limited Series Production (LSP) units of the related Archer UAV for Indian Army and Air Force trials, including air-to-surface missile tests, with weaponized Archer-NG variants expected within three years and a unified Ground Control Station supporting 6-7 UAVs. Platforms involved encompass shared avionics, software, GCS, and Ground Data Terminal with TAPAS, enabling autonomous takeoff/landing on short runways. Strategically, Archer-NG bolsters India's self-reliance under Atmanirbhar Bharat amid border tensions with China and Pakistan, addressing the need for 150+ MALE drones across services by enhancing real-time ISR, strike capabilities, and reducing foreign dependence (e.g., supplementing Heron or MQ-9B), while competing with private sector bids for larger orders like 87 UAVs. It integrates indigenous weapons from inception, supporting tactical reconnaissance, high-value target strikes, and artillery guidance in contested areas.
